Sixteen 47

In 1991 Dawn French and Helen Teague became managers and founders of Sixteen 47; a clothes shop for large women. Dawn's main objective for the shop is to provide not just clothes for 'big girls', but beautiful clothes.

Along the high street there is hardly any choice available when it comes to clothing for fuller figured women. There is a big gap in the clothes market, and a large number of people are not being catered for. For this reason, Sixteen 47 was set up, named from the statistic that 47% of the British female population are at least a size 16. A huge variety of clothes are offered from a size 16 up to a 48. Selling casual cotton jerseys, leggings and sweaters, and everything from work wear up to the luxurious feel of velvet for evening wear, Sixteen 47 offers something for everyone.

Just a few years ago, their exclusive designer label 'French and Teague' was set up and is now available as an international designer range around London in upmarket department stores such as Liberty and Selfridges. As co-director and partner, Dawn has a very full and active role in the running of the business.

Dawn herself remembers exactly the sort of problems that big women face trying to find clothes that fit, let alone those which are good quality and attractive.

'In my teens, I was wearing clothes that were for women in their fifties',

But now Dawn has certainly helped to change that. But she doesn't want to be a 'missionary for big girls', nor will she abandon the life of show business in favour of being a clothes mogul.

'It's just another string to my bow.'

The Sixteen 47 range is now widely available nationwide in EVANS stores.
